In our pursuit to design the most effective bar review program, we had to reflect on the problems that pervade competitors and adversely impact examinee performance. The question remains: Why are people failing the bar, even after investing thousands of dollars into reputable courses and studying full-time? In this exploration, we delve into the challenges faced by bar examinees, shedding light on the deficiencies within existing programs. We also share an exclusive peek into our innovative approach and solutions.
Ditching the Cookie-Cutter
Socrates said “to know thyself is the beginning of wisdom” and yet students traverse three years of law school and never truly understand how they learn best. It’s ironic that the Socratic method which involves professors posing a series of questions to students about laws and hypos that are designed to stimulate critical thinking actually can have the opposite effect for certain students. You might feel pressured, rushed, and anxious and particularly if you are not an auditory learner.
News alert, there are different styles of learning. Auditory learners prefer absorbing information through listening, finding spoken words, lectures, discussions, and audio materials most effective. Visual learners, on the other hand, grasp concepts best through visual aids like charts, graphs, and images. Kinesthetic learners thrive when engaged in hands-on experiences and physical activities. Logical/analytical learners excel in tasks requiring reasoning and critical analysis, thriving in structured environments that prioritize conceptual understanding and logical clarity.
One of the main reasons someone will purchase a conventional bar review program is because there are audio lectures, even an actual live or in-person component. If that learning style didn’t work for you when you were in school, will it work for you now? Do you think doing the same thing over and over again is going to reach a different result? Many programs adopt a one-size-fits-all approach, neglecting people’s diverse learning preferences. Let’s be real – you are a unique person and only you can know what is best for you. And if you didn’t figure it out by now, guess what now you know and can do something about it.
Navigating the Content Tsunami
The challenge multiplies when, depending on your jurisdiction, you’re faced with 7 to 13 subjects on your bar exam. What makes it even more daunting is the tendency of some companies to inundate students with an overwhelming volume of content. Have you ever seen someone’s insta with a stack of bar prep books over a foot fall? For many, this excess material becomes more of a hindrance than a help, making it difficult to prioritize and retain crucial information.
Traditional courses often create a barrier to effective learning by drowning students in an excessive amount of material. Our approach is different. We believe in keeping the materials focused, aligning with the advice from the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) on what will be tested. Not everyone aspires to be a civil procedure or evidence expert, so we aim to provide the minimum knowledge required to pass while maintaining an enjoyable study experience.
Passing the bar exam doesn’t have to be a tedious journey. By engaging in focused study tailored to your needs, even seemingly dull subjects become enjoyable. Let’s make the study process manageable, by taking complex subjects and breaking it down into digestible bites.
Rejecting the Study Length Fallacy
Have you ever faced failure and been told that it’s solely because you didn’t study long or hard enough? That is simply not true. We both know you put in the effort, but perhaps the real issue was studying smart. When you study intelligently, you identify your preferred learning methods and tailor your approach accordingly.
Moreover, the notion that everyone must dedicate 24/7 for 2-3 months to succeed in the bar exam is a fallacy. Not every test-taker is a first-timer or unemployed. People have different priorities and preferences. A well-balanced six months, while juggling work and family commitments, can be just as effective. Ultimately, only you understand what works best for you, so don’t let others dictate a particular schedule.
After reflecting on your learning style, did you realize you’re not an auditory learner or that you prefer shorter, more digestible bits of info? And now you realize there aren’t that many bar review programs out there for you…well that’s where we’ve been doing a lot of brainstorming.
